KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ashley Landis is an Associated Press photographer based in Houston, Texas. She has spent the last six years of her 21-year career at The Associated Press. Landis specializes in sports, news and features.
why this photo
Argentina’s Lautaro Martínez celebrates with fans by jumping over an LED board after scoring in extra time against Switzerland. That doesn’t happen every game, so I stayed with him. He ended up high-fiving a few people in the front row before returning to celebrate with his team. This was the goal that clinched Argentina’s victory.
How this photo was made
I photographed Martinez’s goal from across the field and followed his reaction with a 400mm f2.8 lens. I had to keep my focus on Martinez because he was surrounded by so many people.
Why this photo works
Martinez’s reaction was loud enough to be clearly seen from across the pitch. Dozens of fans and players are wearing the same colors in the photo, but Martinez stands out because of his facial expression and peak of emotion. A fan celebrates with him with his arms raised, framed so that his eyes are directed directly to the bottom center of the frame.
