Liverpool sells Louis Diaz to Bayern Munich, and the Reds face a dilemma by determining their new No. 7 after a busy summer at the transfer window, allowing for re-shuffling of shirt numbers
Liverpool were able to make major changes to their team figures this summer after a busy transfer window. Louis Diaz has completed a £65 million move to Bayern Munich. This means that the club’s number 7 shirt is now available.
The Reds chose to spend cash this summer after winning the Premier League title last season. Liverpool snapped Bayer Leverkusen’s Star Florian Wiltz on a deal that could be worth £116 million from the UK record.
The signatures of Hugo Ekitike, fullbacks Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, as well as goalkeepers Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman, mean there are plenty of new faces in the dressing room. This gives Liverpool several options to inherit Diaz’s No. 7 shirt, closely associated with club legend Kenny Dalglish.

Wirtz stands out as one of the possibilities of being named Liverpool’s new No. 7. The 22-year-old offensive midfielder was in 10th place in his last two seasons at Leverkusen, where he previously wore 27th place, after stepping up from the club’s academy.
The Alexis Mac Allister is currently in the 10th place in Liverpool. This means that Wirtz can be given the old number of Diaz instead. Alternatively, Mac Allister could be forced to give up his shirt number by Wirtz, making him the candidate to wear the number seven.
Ekitique’s signature buddy is another possibility, following a £79 million move from Entracht Frankfurt, especially as the French star is definitely a replacement for Dias. The versatile forward has worn various team figures throughout his relatively short career, but recently he was No. 11th in his time in Germany.
Liverpool is not in the transfer business as the club is interested in Alexander Isaac, which costs £150 million. The striker is currently wearing 14th place for Newcastle United, but may opt to switch if he completes his move to Anfield.
Other options for getting Diaz’s old numbers within the Liverpool team are Cody Gakupo (No. 18), Harvey Elliot (No. 19), Curtis Jones (No. 17), and Federico Chiesa (No. 14). If Darwin Nunes (No. 9) also leaves the club this summer, there could be further modifications.
Luckily, some of Liverpool’s other new signatures are not facing a fight for their preferred shirt number. Right Backflimon can claim the number 30 he’s worn since Celtic times.
Former Valencia goalkeeper Mamardashvili also found his preferred No. 25 shirt available after arriving to compete with Alisson Becker. Meanwhile, fellow goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has worn No. 27 or No. 41 in the past, but neither is currently being adopted.
Kerquez was previously third in Bournemouth and also wore it at AC Milan’s academy, but that number belongs to Liverpool’s Watal End. A transfer window is ongoing, but the club has assigned each of the new signatures with temporary team numbers from No. 54 to No. 59.
Former Liverpool No. 7 Diaz posted a heartfelt message on social media as he left Liverpool. The 28-year-old was signed by Porto in January 2022.
“I will cherish forever three and a half years. I have arrived with all the dreams of the world and I am proud of everything we have achieved together,” he writes. “I met incredible people, great colleagues, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans.
“Liverpool is certainly a special team and I have everyone in mind. The cycle ends here and I am so happy to see how happy we are and realize it. Not only for the trophies we won, but also for the unions and friendships that made it all possible.
“It’s good to satisfy a sense of duty and leave the champion above all else. As we said, I say, I repeat, especially as I carry everyone with me, but I will never forget him.
With the community shields left within two weeks as Liverpool won Crystal Palace at Wembley on Sunday, August 10th, they will need to go straight away before the final decision on the shirt number must be made ahead of the new season.
