Liverpool could secure a replacement for Mohamed Salah in a second summer signing. The Reds will already have Jeremy Jaquet on board once the transfer window opens.
Arne Slott has endured a difficult season as Liverpool manager. Despite replacing Jurgen Klopp as manager and winning the top flight title in his debut season, the team fell well short of their goal of defending the title. The Reds failed to advance to the domestic cup finals and were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. They narrowly qualified for next season and finished fifth in the Premier League.
Salah’s departure from Anfield has only added to the misery, with attention now firmly turning to reinforcements. Jacquet will join from Rennes, but even more so, Yann Diomand should be the club’s next priority.
Liverpool confirmed a contract agreement with Jaquet in February, but he remains at Rennes on an interim basis. The deal is worth £60 million and the youngster is set to join the team this summer.
He underwent surgery for a shoulder injury but is expected to return to full fitness ahead of the club’s pre-season preparations. Besides Jaquet, Salah also needs a replacement despite not having reached the peak of his abilities when he left, and Diomand fits the bill in many ways.
Diomande primarily plays on the left wing and was recently named the Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Year. He only joined the German club from Leganes in 2025 and has scored 13 goals and provided nine assists in all competitions.
Leipzig paid him just over £17m less than a year ago, but if Liverpool want to sign him, their asking price could reach around £86m, as he is said to have a release clause in his contract.
What makes Diomand such a smart acquisition is his versatility. With Alexander Isaku, Ugo Ekitike, Kodi Gakpo and Rio Ngmoha competing for a spot up front, the ability to play multiple roles will be an invaluable attribute for any future signing.
Diomand is equally comfortable cutting in from his natural left side or from the right. This leaves Ngmoha’s development unhindered and allows Diomande to seamlessly switch sides should Slott want to use both Isaac and Ekitike at the same time.
He can do this even in the middle of a match. This means that if he and Ngmoha both come on together, they can wreak havoc on either full-back and keep the opposition defense guessing.
Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be keeping a close eye on Diomand, which is another reason why the Reds should move quickly to secure a teenager who has the potential to roam up and down the Anfield flank for years to come.
