Brave Thomas Tuchel is giving the FA exactly what they wanted ahead of England’s World Cup campaign

The Football Association wants Thomas Tuchel’s ruthless mentality to apply to his work with England, and he certainly did that in his selection for the World Cup squad.

There are reasons why the Football Association decided against England’s leaders. They appointed Thomas Tuchel to make the big decisions.

Don’t be enslaved to old friends’ rules, egos, or reputations. And the bottom line is that while Tuchel cannot be praised for his track record as a manager and his, to put it bluntly, no-nonsense approach, he cannot be criticized for making one or two bold choices.

Especially with a 26-man team, he could have selected some players based on what the players could bring, rather than what they’ve brought in recent weeks and months. But that would have been a bit of a cop-out.

National selection, even a tournament, should be partly a reward, a reward for hard work, effort, and excellence. Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are great players but haven’t had a great season this season. Far from it.

The players just need to find some form, and Palmer has contributed one goal in the last 16 games. Of the two super-talented men, Foden is perhaps the one who feels the more sadness.

But the truth is that Foden was less than impressed when he got his chance in an England shirt under Tuchel. Given the club’s form in recent months, it’s understandable to feel that Morgan Gibbs-White has perhaps had a harder time than Foden or Palmer, but Tuchel is fortunate in that he has a player in the same league as the Nottingham Forest player.

Gibbs-White has had some bad luck, and the same can be said for Adam Wharton, but the Crystal Palace midfielder played at Euro 2024 but was unable to kick a ball, and perhaps Tuchel did not want him to go through the same experience in what will be a very long camp in the United States. Elliott Anderson and Declan Rice were guaranteed to start, and Wharton would have been a training ground player.

Harry Maguire, who plays for England

Jordan Henderson will fill that role instead. That’s what Henderson, who turns 36 in less than four weeks, will do – enforce discipline, motivate players whose chances may be limited, lead the dressing room and advise captain Harry Kane.

Whether you agree with the need for such a person or not, Tuchel believes he needs such a person in his team. Bringing Henderson into camp is a bold move. Choosing Ivan Toni is a bold move because he knows it is very unpopular. But a good one.

Tony made a decisive impact in the last edition of the tournament, scoring 42 goals and providing 10 assists this season for his Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahly. He is a perfect penalty taker and that can’t be underestimated in a World Cup where we expect a lot of drawn games.

Of course, every team will have their own opinions, and many will agree that Harry Maguire deserves to be named. But the fact that Maguire has decided to publicly announce his “shock” at being left out probably speaks to why Tuchel won’t accept him.

Maguire has had a few decent games for Manchester United and believes he could be in the squad for the national team. Why does Maguire need to be “shocked”? It took a year for Tuchel to be selected for the team. In his first international match under Tuchel, he had a middling performance in a match England were forced to draw against Uruguay at Wembley.

He then played a few minutes in the loss against Japan. Tuchel closely watched Maguire during training and decided he would be better off with another centre-half. fair enough. And judging by Maguire’s reaction, he preferred others with smaller egos.

That’s a nonsense decision. That’s why the FA is paying so much money for Tuchel.
