Manchester United star Casemiro has branded Jamie Carragher’s infamous comments “disrespectful” after the pundit told him he will leave the club in 2024. The experienced midfielder has since silenced his critics after making a comeback at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian captain helped Michael Carrick’s side qualify for this season’s Champions League. Casemiro ended his four-year spell on a high note, scoring nine goals in 33 league games as a defensive midfielder.

However, the 34-year-old has previously endured a period of poor form at United. After a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in May 2024, Liverpool legend Carragher insisted Casemiro’s days as an elite player were over.

“There’s a saying that I always remember as a footballer: ‘Leave football before football leaves you,'” Carragher told Sky Sports. “He has stepped away from football. At this top level, he needs to finish his job at this level and move on.”

Two years on, the five-time Champions League winner has had arguably his best season in English football. But Casemiro hit back at Carragher after he was reminded of former United defender Rio Ferdinand’s verdict on him: “Leave football before it gives up on you”, with whom he also has a feud with a former England team-mate.

“So… it’s your opinion. I respect your opinion. I don’t like it because it’s rude. It’s rude to me,” Casemiro said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel.

“What you win in football. But football changes. Life changes. Life changes. So look now. That’s what this is about. For me, the best thing at this moment that we’re talking about in Spain is that I’m living in a big darkness. I’m living with a good feeling. I’m living in a big darkness.”

“Everyone misses Casemiro. Do you know? In this regard, I decided to leave because I live in a good place. It’s the same in Madrid. Everyone misses me. Everyone misses this team, and it’s the same now. So, life changes. It’s the same in Madrid.”

“That’s life. Everyone forgets quickly. Everyone forgets quickly. But again, the spirit.”

Before joining United, Casemiro spent eight-and-a-half years at Real Madrid, where he won a number of major trophies, including three La Liga titles and five Champions League titles. Earlier this season, the Brazilian confirmed he would leave United in the summer, despite calls for him to extend his stay.

Mr Casemiro hit back at Mr Carragher, but the critic has already admitted he was wrong. In February, the 48-year-old reignited his harsh criticism of the United midfielder after a string of impressive performances under new manager Carrick.

“It’s now fair to say football hasn’t left him,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “If Casemiro wants to hit back at me and say, ‘Leave the pundits before the pundits leave!’ that’s well within his rights.” He could definitely get one of them back. He looks like a completely different player because of him. ”
