Manchester United were grateful to Koby Mainu for saving their blushes as they survived the disaster by defeating Liverpool in a thrilling five-goal game. They got off to a dream start after just six minutes when Matheus Cunha found the back of the net and Benjamin Sesco crossed the goal line from close range. The goal was allowed to stand by VAR, even though the forward appeared to brush the ball away with his hand during the scoring process.
United were firmly in the lead and headed for victory, but the second half was almost a completely different game as the visitors scored two quick goals in nine minutes. Dominik Szoboszlai took advantage of Amad’s mistake and ran the length of the pitch to find the bottom corner, but Senne Ramens carelessly passed the ball to Kodi Gakpo for the easiest finish.
It looked like United would be forced to settle for a draw until Maynoux smashed home from the edge of the box to jubilant Old Trafford. With this result, the Red Devils secured their place in next season’s Champions League and achieved their first domestic double against Liverpool in 10 years.
Here’s our take on United’s players from today’s dramatic win…
Manchester United player rating vs Liverpool
Senne Ramens – 5
The first goal wasn’t my fault, but the second goal was a bad pass under pressure and was completely my fault. My mind gets confused.
Although he contributed to starting the attack with direct running, he lacked concentration when Liverpool scored the first goal.
We enjoyed a solid first half, but we could have done more to stop Szoboszlai from running all over United.
Despite the size of the match, there were no tense or out-of-place looks at the back. We rose to the challenge and played a good game.
He was an excellent player at the back and also played well in attack, putting in a great cross into Sesco’s goal in the build-up. A strong display overall.
They started well enough, but struggled to cope with the pace of the match as Liverpool reversed in the second half.
He saved the day with a great shot from outside the box and scored his first Premier League goal in about two years.

He was instrumental in United’s second goal and almost got on the scoresheet himself. As always, at the center of everything.
He took control from the start, playing some dangerous balls into Liverpool’s box. United posed a threat almost every time they advanced.
After just six minutes, he scored the opening goal with a brilliant bounce, linking up well with his attacking teammates.
He got into the right area and put the ball together to score United’s second goal. He played well before being substituted at the break.
He gave the ball away with a terrible pass in the build-up to Szoboszlai’s goal, which probably didn’t do much for his confidence.
He came on for Mbeumo with 15 minutes remaining. In reality, he just ran around without much effort and fumbled for a great chance to score.
Joined late to replace Cunha.
He came on in the second half to replace Fernandes.
