The end of the season can’t come soon enough for Newcastle United. Following such an encouraging 2024-25 season that brought silver medals and Champions League football, this term has been a huge disappointment and has put head coach Eddie Howe under considerable pressure.
It’s clear that changes are needed within the team. Underperforming players could be moved on, clarity will need to be given over the future of certain star players and new recruits will be needed ahead of a campaign in which the club is expected to begin its bid for European football. Express Sport looks at this season’s squad and assesses which players should leave and who should stay…
goalkeeper
Nick Pope: After a disastrous season, it may be time for him to look for pastures new, with United set to strengthen their goalkeeping department this summer with the potential signing of James Trafford on a long-term deal from Manchester City.
Aaron Ramsdale: He has made more than 20 appearances this season but probably hasn’t shown enough to convince United to sign him on a permanent transfer from Southampton.
John Ruddy: The 39-year-old’s contract expires in the summer, so he is destined to leave.
Mark Gillespie: With two and possibly three keepers leaving, retaining a third-choice stopper could prove beneficial.
Odyseas Brachodimos (on loan at Sevilla): It’s hard to imagine the 32-year-old representing the Magpies next season. Another loan or outright purchase may be considered.

defender
Matt Targett (on loan at Middlesbrough): With his contract with the Magpies due to expire soon, he could make a permanent move to Boro this summer, but that will probably depend on whether they can secure promotion.
Kieran Trippier: The experienced full-back will leave the club this summer after four years of loyal service.
Emil Craft: Another right-back who is on the verge of leaving the club as his contract expires.
Lewis Hall: One of Newcastle’s standout performers this season. Interest from elsewhere is inevitable this summer, but he is worth being part of the club’s long-term plans.
Sven Botman: He has recently signed a new long-term contract and will remain at the club next season. Hopefully he can avoid further injury setbacks.
Fabian Schaal: With his contract expiring in the summer, it’s definitely time for the defender to find pastures new.
Malik Thiau: Must eliminate the costly mistakes that marred his debut campaign. Still, he should be given a chance to prove his worth next season.
Tino Livramento: A talented player, but if he can’t sign a new contract soon (he has two years left on his current contract), it might be wise to sell him while his market value is high.
Dan Byrne: The Magpies will continue to need his passion and leadership, whether he plays every week or not, in what could be an eventful summer.

midfielder
Joelinton: Despite openly expressing his desire to finish his career in Brazil, the midfielder, who turns 30 in August, still has much to offer the Magpies.
Sandro Tonali: Yet another player is set to leave the club. Newcastle fans will be hoping that the Italian can be reminded of the club’s unwavering support during his suspension and be able to convince him to stay.
Jacob Murphy: A dedicated team member, but lacks the qualities needed to move the team forward. The time has come for his departure.
Joe Willock: After an almost underwhelming spell on Tyneside, it’s time for him to take the next step.
Bruno Guimarães: Retaining the Brazilian, who has a huge presence both in the team and at the club, will be crucial, especially if Tonali leaves.
Jacob Ramsey: A challenging debut season at St James’ Park. It should survive, but the 2026/27 campaign needs to be improved.
Lewis Miley: The adaptable midfielder also performed well at right-back when needed. It has great potential, so we must continue to protect it.
Antonio Cordero (on loan at Cadiz): The Spanish winger could qualify for the Championship next season after a further loan spell.

attacker
Yoan Ouissa: After an unforgettable first season at the club, Newcastle are probably prepared to cut their losses, even if it means taking a financial hit. It could prove beneficial for everyone involved.
Anthony Gordon: Amid speculation over his future, United can afford to take a tough stance given his contract doesn’t expire until 2030. If it’s clear he wants to leave, it might be wise to raise the cash and reinvest it.
Harvey Barnes: Another quality player who underperformed this season. You need to start fresh, but leave it alone.
Anthony Elanga: It was a very disappointing season, but we deserve another campaign. I’m sure it will be better.
Nick Woltemade: Another forward who has had a difficult time in life and is probably still haunted by Derby’s own goal. However, establishing himself in the Premier League is no mean feat. You just need a little more patience.
