FIFA cancels Italy World Cup Twist as Iran’s stance sparks global reaction

FIFA has no plans to replace Iran in this summer’s World Cup with Italy, despite a proposal linked to President Donald Trump’s allies. The suggestion came from Paolo Zampolli, who told the Financial Times that he had recommended to both Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino that the Italian national team compete in the tournament instead of Iran.

FIFA takes stand on growing controversy

Iran’s response was immediate and strong. Iranian embassy officials described the proposal as “moral bankruptcy” and defended their team’s right to compete after qualifying, along with all other countries scheduled to participate in the World Cup.

This idea was not accepted even within Italy. Government officials and sports leaders, including Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti and Olympic Committee President Luciano Buonfiglio, emphasized the fundamental principle that “places on the pitch are earned, not through politics.”

Regarding the participation of Middle Eastern countries, Infantino had stated for several days that “Iran will definitely come.”

This uncertainty stems from ongoing geopolitical tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Although the team qualified and secured a spot, security and logistics concerns have raised questions about Iran’s involvement. However, FIFA rules are not political proposals and only give the organization full control in extreme cases, usually with formal withdrawal or sanctions.

There is currently no indication that Iran will be excluded. Tournaments scheduled to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will continue to closely monitor the situation throughout the tournament.

At times, football is intertwined with and shaped by politics. But for now, the 2026 World Cup appears to be staying the course, staying true to fairness, rules and the sport’s most important principles: fair play.
