Inter Miami will face Real Salt Lake today, Wednesday, April 22nd, in Week 9 of Major League Soccer, but this game will have a special twist.
Team captain Lionel Messi is six goals away from breaking the historic MLS record (goals + assists).
Messi is one step away from making history in MLS
The Argentine star has made a huge impact since joining Inter Miami in 2023, winning four titles and delighting fans with all his exploits on and off the field.
But his next match could be pivotal in soccer history and his own career. With 57 goals and 37 assists in 60 games with the Herons, Leo could add six more goals to become the fastest player in league history to reach 100 goal contributions.
This record is currently held by Sebastian Giovinco, but it took him 95 games to achieve it during his time with Toronto FC. With over 30 games remaining, Leo could take away this record against Real Salt Lake and close the gap or even surpass it in future games.
On the other hand, this figure reflects not only the Argentine’s talent, but also his influence and contribution to the club. After almost three full seasons, Messi has been involved in almost every second of his team’s goals and leads Inter Miami’s attack in every game, according to the league’s official records.
After Lionel added two more goals in a recent 3-2 win against the Colorado Rapids, coach Guillermo Hoyos’ team will look to continue their good run in the Eastern Conference, where they currently sit in second place with 15 points. The game is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET and will be played at America First Field, and is already looking promising.
