Jonathan Klinsmann, the son of German legend and former US coach Jurgen Klinsmann, was rushed to an Italian hospital after sustaining a serious injury in Serie B. The American goalkeeper from Cesena was the main negative against Palermo. The home team won 2-0 and he had to be carried off on a stretcher as the game drew to a close.
In a 50-50 contest, the 29-year-old Klinsmann collided with Filippo Ranocchia, hitting the goalkeeper in the head with his foot and sustaining a serious injury on the pitch. After being evacuated and wearing a cervical collar, he was admitted to a hospital in Sicily.
Medical tests revealed that Klinsmann’s son suffered a dangerous fracture of the first cervical vertebra. Due to the delicate nature of the injury, the recovery was slow and, as the player himself admitted on his Instagram account, his season was clearly over.
Jonathan Klinsmann’s message
“Unfortunately, my season ended on Saturday. I broke my spine during the game and will be out for a while. I would like to thank everyone here on the field in Palermo and in the hospital, the fans at @cesenafc and @palermofficial for their good wishes, and of course my friends and family for their support over the last few days. I wish the players all the best as they fight for the playoffs and I will see you soon,” he wrote on social media.
