In Week 8 of MLS, the San Jose Earthquakes defeated LAFC 4-1 at BMO Stadium, but it wasn’t just the visiting team’s lopsided victory that grabbed everyone’s attention.
The match was a special one for Timo Werner and Son Heung-min, as it meant a reunion as rivals but former Tottenham Hotspur team-mates. For this reason, the German player left a warm message for Son before the match.
Werner expresses deep love for former teammate
The match was full of excitement and anticipation among MLS fans, but it also brought back old memories for Tottenham supporters as the two star players of the Premier League teams, Timo Werner of the San Jose Earthquakes and Son Heung-min of LAFC, faced each other. And they knew it.
For this reason, the former Leipzig player and Son exchanged big smiles and a warm hug before taking to the field. Shortly afterwards, Werner was asked about reuniting with the LAFC star, with whom he had shared a dressing room for 18 months, and he said:
“We had a bit of a joke before the game and then we had a longer conversation. I’m really happy to see Son again. We were great friends when we were at Tottenham,” the German explained (via Star News).
“I’m really happy that Mr. Song has found a place to play and have fun. I’m happy to see him again,” he added with noticeable affection and admiration.
On the other hand, although the first half of the match ended 0-0, the away team completely took control of the match from the start of the second half. Osseni Buddha (53′, 80′) and Werner himself (56′) were responsible for crushing the home team. Ryan Porteous (58′) and Reid Roberts (75′) scored the other goals of the game with own goals.
Werner, who had a goal and one assist, said after the game, “Today’s goal was very meaningful. We have endured injuries and tough times. I am proud that we were able to come back under these circumstances, score a goal, and contribute to the victory.”
Meanwhile, LAFC and Son prepare to face the Colorado Rapids again at BMO Stadium on Wednesday, April 22nd at 8:30pm ET.
Meanwhile, Werner’s San Jose Earthquakes will face Austin FC at PayPal Park on the same day at 10:30 p.m. (ET).
