DFormer Real Madrid and Bayern Munich Lodz winger Arjen Robben gave an interview to Bayern’s official media to assess the draw after Germany’s win at the Bernabeu, hours before the second leg at the Allianz Arena.
“For me, Bayern were the better team in the first leg. Maybe the result doesn’t fully reflect Bayern’s superiority, but we have to stay awake and focused for the whole 90 minutes,” he said. “Even if you think, ‘We’re 2-0 up, everything’s fine…’ Sometimes they score goals out of thin air. In football, matches are never decided. Madrid are the best example of that.”
Real Madrid sometimes score from nothing, but sometimes they only need a second or two.
When asked about the white team, Robben warned: “You can never rule out Real Madrid. I’m impressed with how calm they always are. Sometimes they defend very deep and then suddenly they counter-attack. Sometimes they only need a second or two. We have to be aware of that. They have a lot of individual quality, but as a team I think Bayern are the better team.”
The former Bedum player, who played for the Madrid team from 2007 to 2009, spoke about the ambitions of Florentino Perez’s club. “They are always looking to build the best team and want to sign the best players,” he said. “They once had the Galacticos, then Cristiano, Kaka, Xabi Alonso, they always had great players and great names,” he added.
If Bayern can stay focused, there’s only one team that can win for me
Finally, Robben predicted a Bayern victory and made his case. “It’s a solid team, everything is going perfectly at the moment. It’s a working machine and I think it will remain that way until the end! But it’s still football, so red cards and situations like that are always possible. Of course we have to be careful about that. We have to concentrate for 95 minutes. If Bayern manage that, for me there’s only one team that can win,” he said.
