Javier Mascherano has shockingly resigned as Inter Miami’s head coach, citing personal reasons, bringing one of Major League Soccer’s fastest-growing projects to an abrupt halt.
The announcement comes at a sensitive time for the 2026 season. Inter Miami remains competitive in the Eastern Conference, but the departure of the man who orchestrated that rise creates uncertainty for a team built to dominate at home and abroad.
Mascherano confirmed his decision in a statement released by the club and reflected on his short but transformative spell in charge.
“I would like to inform everyone that due to personal reasons I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” Mascherano said.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the club for the trust they have shown in me, all the employees who have given their all as part of the organization, and especially the players who have made it possible for me to experience some unforgettable moments.
“I would also like to thank the fans and La Familia, because without them none of this would have been possible.
“I will always carry the memories of our first star with me and continue to wish the club continued success wherever I am. I have no doubt that the club will continue to enjoy success.”
“Sending you all a big hug and thank you for everything.”
From promise to superiority in one season
Mascherano’s influence was immediate and at times overwhelming. Tasked with leading a high-profile team that included Lionel Messi, he quickly turned potential into reality.
Inter Miami’s 2025 season was one of the most prolific in MLS history. The team set a new benchmark for the league by scoring 101 goals through the regular season and playoffs, as well as scoring 20 goals in the postseason leading up to MLS Cup.
That aggressive identity was also matched by the results. The club won the Eastern Conference title and won its first MLS Cup, an accomplishment that firmly established Inter Miami as a legitimate force in North American soccer.
On the world stage, the team went even further. Their breakthrough at the Club World Cup, which included a landmark victory over a European opponent, made them the first MLS team to reach the finals.
Managing owner Jorge Mas acknowledged the magnitude of Mascherano’s contribution, saying the standards he set on and off the pitch “will forever be part of the history of this club.”
“Javier will forever be part of the history of this club and will always have a special place in the Inter Miami CF family,” added Mas.
“Not only did he play a key role in some unforgettable achievements, including winning the MLS Cup and the team’s historic performance at the Club World Cup, but he also led by example through his dedication to leading the team and the work he does every day.
“We respect his decision, are deeply grateful for all of his contributions, and wish him the best for his professional and personal future.”
Sudden transition at a critical time
The challenge now is continuity. Guillermo Hoyos has been appointed to lead the team on an interim basis, with Alberto Marrero taking on expanded responsibilities behind the scenes.
Inter Miami’s team has already undergone changes this year, with key departures and new additions reshaping the roster. Nevertheless, hopes remained that the club would build on its record-breaking success.
Mascherano’s departure complicates that trajectory. For a team that continues to establish its long-term identity, losing the man who defined its most successful period raises questions about direction, leadership, and consistency.
The timing of his departure may come as a surprise, but Mascherano’s legacy is already secured. In just one season, he won silver medals, broke records and elevated Inter Miami’s standing on the world stage.
More importantly, he provided a blueprint for what the club could become. Whether that foundation proves strong enough without him will determine Inter Miami’s next chapter. For now, the focus has shifted from celebration to adaptation as one of MLS’s most ambitious teams faces an unexpected turning point.
