○Once again, soccer was exposed, not for the game itself, but for the actions that moved soccer away from sportsmanship and closer to controversy. What was supposed to be an intense Brasileiran match between Corinthians and Palmeiras turned into chaos on and off the field at the Neo Cumica Arena.

This classic match, part of the 11th round of the Brazilian Championship, which ended in a 0-0 draw, was controversial and featured two red cards, obscene gestures, a brawl and a completely chaotic ending.

The legacy of the Corinthians vs. Palmeiras match

Everything exploded in the 35th minute of the first half, when Corinthians were reduced to 10 men after midfielder Andre Lewis was sent off. The player was fouled by Andreas Pereira, after which Andre made obscene gestures towards Pereira, including grabbing his genitals.

This was quickly brought to the referee’s attention by the Palmeiras players, and after a VAR inspection, Ruiz was given a straight red card for gross unsportsmanlike conduct with 10 minutes left in the first half.

Corinthians player sent off for lewd behavior

The incident further heated up an already tense match and reignited controversy over the behavior of home team players recently involved in similar incidents. Alain Rodríguez de Sousa was sent off for making an obscene gesture towards an opponent during Brazil’s Serie A match against Fluminense.

In the second half, instead of calming down, the atmosphere worsened. In the 71st minute, another Corinthians player who was in high spirits was shown a red card.

Mateusinho punched Jos Manuel Lupez in the face and was sent off after another VAR check, leaving the team with nine players who had kept a clean sheet.

But the story didn’t end when the final whistle blew. Tensions spilled over into the locker room, with shoving, yelling and insults among players, coaching staff and even team officials, ending a chaotic day.

As if the scandal wasn’t enough, the match was marred by another significant incident. Palmeiras goalkeeper Carlos Miguel was subjected to a racist assault during a match, as shown in a video shared on social media. A fan could be heard shouting “monkey” at him from the stands. Corinthians also condemned the incident and said they would cooperate to find out what happened.

Once again, soccer is to blame, not for what happens on the field, but for the attitudes that distort the game and create controversy.

With this result, Palmeiras remain undisputed at the top of the table with 26 points, while Corinthians are in 16th place with 11 points and dangerously close to the relegation zone.
