WWith a total of 546 appearances, 38 goals and 25 titles, Marcelo Vieira is one of the key figures in Real Madrid’s history. There he played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, and even faced Cristiano Ronaldo on the field.
However, he also faced Lionel Messi, who challenged him both for Barcelona and for the Argentina national team. Now, Marcelo has revealed who was the most difficult opponent to play against.
Cristiano and Messi: who was the most difficult to face?
Vieira appeared on Brazilian legend Romulio’s YouTube channel and answered several questions from the former Brazilian soccer player and 1994 World Cup hero.
During his career at clubs such as Fluminense, Real Madrid, Olympiakos and the Brazilian national team, Marcelo has played alongside many stars, but also against elite players.
Among his questions, Romulio asked: “You played against Cristiano and Messi, who was the strongest?” Marcelo almost without hesitation chose the 38-year-old Argentine, whom he has faced more than 30 times.
“Messi,” he said. “Messi was like a really tough player. I’m still looking for him, damn it. Well, he’s really tough. Messi is really tough,” Marcelo revealed.
“He understands all the positions on the field very well. He knows when the players come with the ball and already knows where to go, where to get out, etc. I think he is an extraordinary person,” he added.
Beyond their on-field intensity, Marcelo has revealed time and time again that there has always been respect between the protagonists of one of the most iconic rivalries in modern football: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid, or Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo.
Over time, these matches will be remembered as part of the historic rivalries that defined an entire generation and elevated the level of gaming to its highest expression. With these words, Marcelo not only emphasized the difficulty of playing against Messi and CR7, but also the privileges that come with it.
Marcelo officially retired from professional football a little more than a year ago, on February 6, 2025, at the age of 36, but Lionel and Cristiano continue to add chapters to their iconic sporting rivalry.
The Portuguese star is determined to play in his final World Cup and take home the trophy for the first time in history, and with the Argentine captain still in doubt, the pair are looking to make history as the only players to feature in six World Cups.
And Marcelo once again named Messi and his teammates as among the favorites to win, saying: “In no particular order…I think Brazil, Spain, France and Argentina.”
The World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and will open on June 11, 2026 and end on July 19, 2026.
