Cristiano Ronaldo misses hat-trick: tactical reasons behind Portugal star’s substitute appearance against Al Najma

FFor a player who has built his career on chasing records and moments, Cristiano Ronaldo’s return from injury looked perfectly set for another headline performance.

Instead, the Portuguese forward came close to scoring a hat-trick before being substituted in the closing stages, resulting in a decision that divided fans.

Ronaldo marked his return against Al Nasr by scoring two goals in a comfortable 5-2 win against Al Nasr. It was his first appearance after being sidelined for a month due to a hamstring injury.

Although he missed both club matches and Portugal’s recent friendly, his sharpness in front of goal suggested he had shown no signs of rust. However, just as momentum was building, coach Jorge Jesus opted to send him off in the 83rd minute.

The reaction was immediate. Supporters watching the match took to social media to question why Ronaldo was not given the chance to score a hat-trick, especially given his limited playing time in recent weeks.

Jesus made his reasons clear immediately after the match, saying the decision was rooted in long-term planning rather than short-term gain.

“Cristiano did not play in the last two games, so we wanted to rest him,” he explained. “It gave us an opportunity to manage his fitness better, especially after the two-goal lead.”

Al-Nasr also emphasized that Ronaldo himself had accepted the call-up, emphasizing his intention to prioritize the team over personal milestones.

“He’s a very professional, unselfish player,” Jesus said. “I could have stayed on the pitch to score a hat-trick, but I understood the situation and agreed to leave.”

From a tactical perspective, the decision reflects a cautious approach following the injury. Muscle issues, particularly hamstring injuries, often require a cautious return, and allowing Ronaldo to play a full game so soon after his return would be risky.

Still, the alternative optics were hard to ignore. With the match effectively settled and Ronaldo finding his rhythm, many felt the moment required a different approach.

Ronaldo’s return makes him even more important

Lost in the discussion was the importance of Ronaldo’s performance itself. His goals, one from the penalty spot and one from open play, underlined his continued influence in the Saudi Professional League.

Despite being sidelined due to injury, Ronaldo has scored 24 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions this season. It’s a reminder that even at this stage of his career, he remains one of the most consistent attackers in world football.

Meanwhile, Al Nasr continues to lead the title race with 70 points after 27 games. With rivals Al Hilal still within reach, careful management of key players could be important in the final stages of the season.

As the season reaches a decisive stage, bigger priorities are imposed.

The decision to replace Ronaldo may ultimately be seen in a broader perspective. With silverware still within reach and players targeting major milestones, including long-term goals, maintaining fitness will be just as important as the individual moments within a single match.

Ronaldo’s willingness to accept substitutions also indicates that his role will evolve more broadly. The instinct to chase goals remains, but there is an increased emphasis on sustainability and contribution throughout the season.

For Al Nasr, that balance could define the campaign. While the missed opportunity for a hat-trick will remain with some, the overall picture suggests it may have been the right decision.
