Which national team has averaged the highest number of goals per game in World Cup history?

SSince the first World Cup in 1930, plays and goals have taken center stage and been etched in fans’ memories.

However, there was one team that had not returned to competitive play since 1986, despite its outstanding scoring ability.

Team with the highest average number of goals

The Hungarian national soccer team has scored 87 goals in 32 games, ranking first with an average of 2.72 goals per game. This is a record that no other team has ever been able to surpass or even match.

Despite boasting this historic points average and being one of the leading powers in world football, Hungary has not qualified for the World Cup since Mexico in 1986.

Hungary has played in nine tournaments so far. 1934, 1938, 1954, 1958, 1962, 1966, 1978, 1982 and 1986, his last appearance in football’s premier event.

In that tournament, they were placed in Group C, along with teams such as Canada, France, and the Soviet Union. Despite defeating the Canadians (2-0) and Les Bleus (3-0), a heavy 0-6 loss to the Russians in the first match resulted in them being eliminated from the tournament and they did not appear in a World Cup match after that.

Of course, they had their moments of glory too. They reached their peak in the 1954 tournament, reaching the final undefeated at the Vanckdorffstadion in Bern, Switzerland. There they faced West Germany, whom they had already won 8-3 in the group stage. The team started with a 2-0 lead (Pusk vs. Tibor), but a strong comeback by the Germans resulted in a 3-2 defeat, known as the “Miracle of Bern”.

Now Hungary, hoping to return to the World Cup after several years out of the tournament, are eyeing 2030 qualification. Ireland won 3-2 away in the last minute on November 16, denying Dominik Szoboszlai’s Hungary a chance at a play-off spot. Will they return in the 2030 edition?
