WWho is the greatest soccer player of all time? A comic book reopens the debate with the answer
Pele. Maradona. Messi. Zidane. Ronaldo. These are the names that divide generations and reopen family and bar arguments. Choosing one or the other will definitely lead to an all-out war.
It’s not an easy decision. There are many variables. But the creator of Blue Rock, one of today’s best sports comics, makes it clear who the true king of soccer is: Pele. Are they correct?
Pele, the true king of football…according to Blue Rock
In their latest chapter, number 338, they are sending a very clear message: Pele is the king of soccer. That’s what they call him. And it’s more than an homage to his nickname “O Rei.” It’s a complete statement of intent: for them he’s number one, there’s no debate.
That’s no coincidence. Their argument is simple but persuasive. They make their reasons clear. Because he is the only soccer player in history to win the World Cup three times. He scored his first goal in 1962 at just 17 years old, scoring in the final. He did it again in 1962 and 1970. No one has ever achieved anything like this. Just as there are many who have lifted the trophy to the sky twice, there are others who have come close.
But there were only two. Pele did it three times, and for Blue Rock, there was no better reason to end the debate once and for all. However, this is not the only reason.
In a manga where players are obsessed with goals, it is logical that one of the best (if not the best) strikers of all time becomes the main reference for the main character.
In fact, this is not the first time they have named him as the greatest. In the first chapter, published in 2018, we did so. In it, they described Pele as “the greatest player of all time” and emphasized that his ego was one of his greatest weapons.
Muneyuki Kinjo (screenplay) and Yusuke Nomura (art) made Pele a symbol of greed for a goal in their work. In the end, the story “sums up” to creating the ultimate striker. Goal mania. A purebred selfish player.
If Japan wants to aim for the World Cup, they need that. They need a glory-hungry beast, an old-school goalscorer who only thinks about himself when the ball is at his feet.
That’s why Blue Rock’s answer has always been the same. This is Pele. While other great players have been mentioned, the Brazilian star has always had a special shine in the manga, even though he has only appeared a few times.
