Real Madrid lose their second straight game, missing out on a chance to close the gap with La Liga leaders Barcelona

Marton Satriano’s stunning volley gave Getafe a shock 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Monday, ending Real Madrid’s second successive La Liga defeat. As a result, the capital club was unable to close the four-point gap with leader Barcelona. Getafe had lost all of their previous eight league games against Real Madrid, but goalkeeper David Soria’s early saves saved them from losing ground.

Soria committed a turnover on Arda Greer’s shot midway through the first half, but Vinicius Junior quickly scored to frustrate him. Madrid had more possession but lacked punch up front and paid the price for their profligacy six minutes before half-time when Getafe took the lead.

An expected cross from the right was cleared with his head, but the ball fell to Satriano’s feet, who volleyed it into the roof of the net from 20 meters out. It was the Uruguayan’s second goal in three games, having joined on loan from Lyon during the previous transfer window.

Madrid continued to dominate possession in the second half, with Antonio Diger and substitute Rodrigo being among the players who came close to equalizing. However, they could not find a way to break through Getafe’s stiff rearguard and the in-form Soria.

Madrid’s task was made even more difficult when Franco Mastantuono was sent off for dissent in stoppage time, while Getafe’s Adrian Riso was also shown a red card and although they equalized in the last minute, it was too late to make an impact.

Getafe held on and achieved a historic victory at the Santiago Bernabéu, their first since 2008, earning them three vital points towards remaining in La Liga.

“It’s always very difficult to come here,” Getafe defender Kiko Femena told broadcaster DAZN. “I have to congratulate the team. We did a great job at the back and scored when we had the chances. We could have scored more on the counter-attack.”

They moved up three places in the league to 11th, eight points above the relegation zone.
