TThe mobilization of organized crime in different regions of Mexico has increased uncertainty that could affect major sporting events in the country, especially as the 2026 World Cup approaches, scheduled to be jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Under this tense panorama, the match between Mexico and Portugal, scheduled for March 28th at the historic Estadio Azteca, is attracting international attention. Officials have confirmed that high-profile international friendlies will remain on the calendar despite heightened security concerns.
Javier Aguirre’s stance on Mexico vs. Portugal
Mexican national team coach Javier Aguirre said on Tuesday that there has been no change in the preparations and that he fully expects this match to be an important preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“That doesn’t create any uncertainty for me. Of course they have the right to assess the situation, but I am thinking carefully about next month’s FIFA international matches with the players who will be playing abroad. I believe that the match against Portugal will take place without any setbacks,” Aguirre said at a press conference.
His comments follow a statement from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirming that it is closely monitoring the situation in Mexico following the outbreak of violence in Jalisco and other regions last Sunday. The violence was reportedly linked to a security operation that resulted in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
“We don’t know how we are perceived abroad. As Mexicans, we are sensitive to the moment we are living in, but our responsibility is to play this game and continue to prepare for the FIFA window in March. The federation guarantees that we are all safe,” added the Mexican coach.
With the 2026 World Cup venue already set and Estadio Azteca once again set to play a historic role, all eyes will remain on how Mexico will handle security ahead of one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
