SSocial media has a long memory, and amidst the media impact of recent events in Jalisco, past episodes are once again in the spotlight.
A video of Mexican soccer player Antonio “Polo” Briseo sending a personal greeting to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”, has resurfaced, sparking controversy and questions as to whether the Toluca player knew who he was sending greetings to.
Match in Aguascalientes canceled due to concerns over cartel violence
The origins of the controversial Polo Briseo video
That moment happened in 2022, when Antonio Briseo was playing for Club Guadalajara. At the time, Defender was participating in a digital platform where celebrities record personal greetings in exchange for payment.
The mechanism was simple. Once a fan requested a message and made a payment, the celebrity would send the video without necessarily knowing the requester’s true identity.
A video that has been circulating again shows the soccer player saying: “Hello, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, how are you? This is your friend Antonio ‘Polo’ Briseo. I would like to thank you…”
The video only lasts a few seconds, but it was enough to cause controversy then and now.
A greeting that, according to Briseo himself, probably came from ignorance.
After going viral in 2022, Briseno clarified that the message was recorded like any other request within the platform, and that he did not check who made the payment or the context behind the requested name.
He explained that it was a situation that arose out of ignorance and not out of a personal relationship with the alleged leader of the Jalisco cartel.
So far, Antonio Briseo has not released any new public statements regarding the re-emergence of the video.
Who is Antonio “Polo” Briseo?
The Mexican defender spent a long time at Chivas de Guadalajara, but as the seasons went by and the coach changed, he was gradually relegated to the bench, and eventually joined Toluca. This club revived him in terms of football and he started to become a regular, if not a starter, to some extent. Overall, the dividends are positive as he has won two league titles in a row and is currently one of the favorites to win a third title.
