Despite Benfica’s victory, Kylian Mbapp surpasses CR7 and sets a new Champions League record

Real Madrid fans could see a ray of light after the gloom brought on by the 4-2 defeat against Benfica. Merengue’s only two goals are already historic.

Kylian Mbapp, who scored both goals, became Real Madrid’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League group stage, surpassing his childhood idol Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mbapp exceeds CR7

Kylian opened the scoring with a header in the 29th minute, and the second goal came in the 58th minute off an assist from Arda Güler. The double he scored at the Estadio da Luz on Wednesday, January 28th brings his total to 13 goals, surpassing CR7’s 11 goals.

This record had been held by the Portuguese player for almost 10 years, ever since he played against PSG, Shakhtar Donetsk and Malm FF in the 2015/16 season. However, CR7 did it in six games, while Kylian needed the same number to tie and one more to surpass it.

Despite this great achievement, the story may not end here. With 13 goals and two extra games, Mbappu could break a new record held by the Portuguese captain and become the most goals scored in a single season. His 17 goals in the 2013/14 season are the highest ever for a player in a single Champions League.

However, his efforts are not enough to stop Mourinho’s Benfica, with Real Madrid now having to play in the play-offs rather than progressing directly to the round of 16.

That’s right, Kylian did not hide his frustration after the heavy defeat, especially after Benfica’s last goal, which was stopped by goalkeeper Anatoly Trubin. “We played badly… and we’re already down 3-2 and the fourth goal doesn’t change anything. It’s a bit embarrassing, but nothing changes… we deserve this defeat,” he said after the game.

The club will announce tomorrow, Bodo/Glimt and Benfica, who they will face in the round of 16 of the Champions League on Friday, January 30th. The first leg will be played away on February 17th or 18th, while the second leg will be played at Bernabe on February 24th or 25th.

They are currently preparing for their home match against Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday, February 14th. In light of this, Kylian sent a message to his fans.

“I ask Bernab to come and support the team. We are not out of the competition and are doing well in La Liga. If Bernab is with us, we will have a good game.”
