Brahim Diaz published an apology post after Morocco lost to Senegal in the African Cup of Nations final. The Real Madrid player, who missed the penalty that could have given Atlas Lions the title, accepted the mistake and showed his anguish at the result. “My heart hurts. I failed yesterday. I take full responsibility and sincerely apologize,” he wrote on his social networks.

The Moroccan international admitted that the blow will remain for a long time. “This wound will not heal easily, and it will take a long time to recover,” he confessed in a message filled with regret and sadness for missing out on a historic opportunity in his home country. Brahim also appreciated the support he received throughout the tournament. “I dreamed of this title because of all the love, all the messages, all the support you all gave me,” he said.

Africa Cup of Nations descends into chaos over controversial decision

Brahim apologized as follows. "I failed, so I take full responsibility."

Instead of hiding, Brahim wanted to speak directly to his Moroccan fans and the people who believed in him. “I will try. Not just for me, but for everyone who believed in me and everyone who suffered with me,” he added, pledging to continue to return that love on the field.

The missed penalty sealed the story of the final, but that doesn’t mean his Africa Cup of Nations is gone. Brahim was the top scorer of the tournament and became Morocco’s main attacking reference as they progressed to the final. He is now back at Real Madrid injured, but he stood up in the most difficult moment.

Brahim’s full statement

“My soul aches. I dreamed of this title because of all the love you gave me, all the messages, all the support that made me feel like I wasn’t alone. I fought with everything I had and above all with my heart. Yesterday I failed and I take full responsibility and sincerely apologize. It will be difficult to recover, because this wound will not heal easily, but I will try. Not for myself, but for all those who believed in me, and for all those who suffered with me. I will keep going until one day I can give back all this love and be the pride of the Moroccan people.
