Bundesliga: Vincent Kompany shares something with Pep Guardiola as Bayern Munich pursue greater greatness

Vincent Kompany has risen rapidly as a head coach, reaching a milestone that puts him on par with one of the most respected managers in modern football.

Luis Diaz is 29 years old and living his best life at Bayern Munich

After Bayern Munich’s 8-1 win over Wolfsburg, Kompany averaged 2.52 points per game in his first 50 Bundesliga games, equaling the league’s all-time record he shared with former Bayern manager Josep Guardiola.

Despite the importance of the accomplishment, Kompany was quick to deflect credit. “These are not my points, but the players’ points,” the Belgian said when asked about his record. But the figures highlight the impact he has had in a short period of time at one of the world’s most demanding clubs.

Bayern wins the Bundesliga

Following their dominant performance, Bayern held their final training session ahead of their match against Cologne. Victory would complete the best first half of a Bundesliga season in the club’s history. The 8-1 victory took Bayern to 44 points, 11 clear of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table, but RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim still have games in hand.

Kompany acknowledged that such a performance would be difficult to replicate, but stressed the group’s eagerness to go further. “What the players showed on Sunday was not normal and we must not forget that,” he said. “But the motivation is there. I want to see how far I can go at this rate.”

When Bayern appointed Kompany, questions arose. The former Manchester City captain had just completed a relegation season with Burnley in England, and some questioned whether the young coach, with limited experience at the top level, was ready to lead a world-class side. Less than a year later, Kompany silenced those doubts by leading Bayern back to the top of German football following Bayer Leverkusen’s historic double in 2023-24.

Bayern developed an attacking style

Under Kompany, Bayern adopted an aggressive and interesting style that was in line with the club’s expectations. His innovative 2-4-4 structure in possession encourages wingers like Michael Oliseh and Leroy Sane to extend the field, while midfielders and full-backs push from high up to control the game. The results are clear: Bayern lead the Bundesliga this season in terms of average possession, shots and goals.

Defensive stability has also improved. By settling on a consistent back four, Kompany has brought clarity to the backline, with club legend Philipp Lahm also praising the change. Center backs Min-jae Kim and Dayot Upamecano benefited from regular playing time, boosting their confidence and contributing to a more balanced team.

Kompany’s influence extends beyond tactics. His in-game adjustments and half-time intervention proved decisive, including in the 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund in November. Bayern fell behind towards the end of the second half and fought back under Kompany’s calm and analytical guidance. Captain Manuel Neuer gave credit to the coach for making the change in the second half.
