Ajax scored three goals in the final stages of the game and denied Qarabag a surprise victory with an early kick-off.
Four-time European champions Ajax fell behind twice against Azerbaijan but fought back to win 4-2 in Baku.
Karabag was one of the surprise packages in this season’s competition, taking the lead through Camilo Duran after 10 minutes. Kasper Dolberg equalized for Ajax, and Matheus Silva scored a goal two minutes into the second half to make it 2-1.
However, Ajax fought back with three goals in 11 minutes. Oskar Gluk scored in the 79th and 90th minutes, and Anton Gaei added another in the 82nd minute.
Copenhagen also scored late on to beat Villarreal 3-2.
Substitute Andreas Cornelius sealed the victory with a goal in the 90th minute, in a game in which Copenhagen took the lead and then trailed twice.
