TThe 2026 World Cup will enter a decisive phase on Friday, December 5th, when the 48 teams will learn their path to advance to the final, which will be played in New York vs. New Jersey on July 19th. FIFA confirmed the entire draw procedure and announced that the draw will be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., in the presence of all qualifying coaches, officials and referees. The official schedule, including stadiums and times, will be announced one day later on Saturday, December 6th.

FIFA has confirmed that 48 participants will be divided into four pots of 12 teams based on the men’s world rankings, which will be published on November 19, 2025. Host countries Canada, Mexico and the United States will occupy Pot 1 and have already been assigned places, with Mexico in Group A (A1), Canada in Group B (B1) and the United States in Group D (D1). The other nine teams in the first pot, led by Spain, Argentina, France and England, will also be placed in first place in their allocated groups.
A key innovation is the distribution of competitiveness, designed so that the top four teams do not meet before the semi-finals. France and England will follow the same principles, while Spain and Argentina will take the opposite path. If everyone wins in their group, they may only cross on the final stage.
Pot and Union Limits
Teams are organized into pots according to their rankings, with teams from the European and Intercontinental playoffs occupying pot 4. The draw will be drawn in order from pot 1 to pot 4, with groups A to L being filled.
Regulations state that there can only be one team per group from the same federation, with the exception of UEFA, which can have up to two teams due to its large representation. Every group must have at least one European team.
For teams still participating in the Intercontinental Playoffs and European Playoffs, federation restrictions only apply to teams within their respective paths.
Date, venue and time will be decided after lottery
Once the groups are known, FIFA will publish an updated schedule including the assigned stadium and kick-off time for each match.
The governing body explained that the subsequent schedule will prioritize optimal conditions for the team and aim to make it easier for fans to follow the team at appropriate times around the world.
