Ian Wright defends Jude Bellingham, saying ‘England is not ready for a black superstar’

Arsenal and England legend Ian Wright has once again spoken out in defense of Jude Bellingham following recent criticism of the Real Madrid midfielder in his home country. In a conversation on The Overlap, a YouTube channel featuring Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville, Mr Wright claimed there was a racial element to media harassment. “England is not ready for a black superstar,” he said frankly.

The former football player emphasized that Bellingham is a young and talented player with a strong personality, which, according to him, is what makes some media sections uncomfortable. “I’m worried about Jude because he’s someone that the media can’t control. He’s showing people that I’m here, I’m black, I’m proud, I’m ready,” Wright said, lamenting that this attitude has led to rejection.

“Intimidate people with their ability and inspiration.”

Wright elaborated on his position, explaining that Bellingham’s confidence and presence are seen as a threat to those seeking to maintain a negative narrative. “He goes out there and performs and does what he has to do. He’s too bold for these guys. Someone like Jude somehow scares these guys because of his ability and his inspiration,” he said.

To illustrate his point, he compared media treatment between different black soccer players. “Everyone loves N’Golo Kante. He’s humble, he does what he does, he has that character. But when you have Pogba and Bellingham and they have that kind of energy, that doesn’t sit well with people,” he added, accusing him of double standards.

A history of baseless accusations and attacks

Bellingham has recently been the subject of criticism from some British journalists. He was accused of not celebrating Harry Kane’s goal against Albania (though this was later refuted by footage), and was accused of being upset after being replaced by Morgan Rodgers, although the cameras did not catch the gesture mentioned. Wright has already defended himself, posting a message on social media from the BBC, calling the player a “great player with talent and lots of love.”

“The problem is that they have to make up this story because there is nothing else to talk about until the World Cup. They, like many other players, do not want to be able to contact him or have a negative impact on his career,” the former striker wrote.

Racism in the media, a recurring theme in the UK

In the same talk, Gary Neville recalled a conversation he had with then-Manchester City player Raheem Sterling in 2016, in which he confessed that he felt persecuted by the press because of the color of his skin. “He felt he was being unfairly attacked and it had nothing to do with football,” Neville said, stressing that this pattern of reporting continues.

As England prepare for the 2026 World Cup, debate over the treatment of their players by the media is once again at the center of discussion. Wright argues that criticism of Bellingham goes beyond sports.
