BUntil the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese national team had an unremarkable track record on the international stage. In 82 years of competition, Portuguese teams have qualified for only three of the 11 European Championships, with a participation rate of 27%. At the World Cup, their appearances were even more erratic, with just three appearances out of 17, representing 18% of the total.

Even before the Ronaldo phenomenon, Portugal had never won an official title. Its trajectory was marked by a generation of talent, but an inability to sustain successful projects. The national team was competitive at times, but inconsistent in major tournaments.

The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo was a turning point.

Cristiano’s debut with the national team was accompanied by a huge international career and completely changed the history of Portuguese football. Since his debut, the national team has participated in six out of six European Championships, with a 100% success rate in qualifying. Their continued World Cup appearances reflect the same pattern, with six consecutive World Cup appearances and 100% attendance.

The highest-scoring national team in international soccer history has become a regular fixture at major tournaments.

The team without a title went on to win three trophies.

Before Cristiano, Portugal had never won an official title. Three trophies: Euro 2016, historic as the first major championship in history. Two editions of the UEFA Nations League brought about a change in mentality within the team, with Cristiano becoming the emotional reference point.

A leader who raised the level of competition among his generation.

A unique case in the history of international football

Portugal went from playing in 6 out of 28 major competitions (21% success rate) to playing in 100% of all competitions, or 12 out of 12, since Cristiano Ronaldo’s debut. No other player in world football can match the impact that Cristiano Ronaldo has had on Portugal.

. His presence not only changed the outcome, but the entire identity.
