Cristiano Ronaldo is sent off with the first red card in Portugal’s history and may miss the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo has seen just about everything at the pinnacle of world football over two decades. But on Thursday night in Dublin, the Portugal captain experienced the first experience he hoped to avoid, one that could cost him next year’s 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 40-year-old was shown a red card in his first international match after elbowing Dara O’Shea, forcing him to leave his home country for a crucial qualifier against Ireland with 10 men.

This makes it more likely that the player will miss the opening game of the World Cup if Portugal confirm his spot.

The incident occurred just after the first hour, when Portugal were already leading 2-0. Former Tottenham striker Troy Parrott scored twice in the first half, leaving the visiting side in trouble after a sharp finish that surprised Roberto Martinez’s side.

As frustration mounted, former Real Madrid star Ronaldo became involved in a scuffle with Ipswich Town defender O’Shea in the box.

In a moment that changed the course of the night, Ronaldo elbowed O’Shea into the back and was immediately shown a yellow card before VAR recommended a reconsideration.

Referee Glenn Nyberg was sent to the pitchside monitor and, after replays, the Swedish referee upgraded the warning for violence to a straight red.

It was Cristiano Ronaldo’s 13th red card in his illustrious career, but his first in a Portugal shirt. As he left the field to loud boos from the home crowd, Ronaldo responded with sarcastic applause and appeared to exchange words with Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson.

A victory in Dublin would have guaranteed Portugal a place in the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Instead, they will have to wait until the final qualifier against Armenia, and they will have to do so without their all-time leading scorer.

Will Ronaldo miss Portugal’s World Cup opener?

Under the current International Disciplinary Regulations, a red card results in an automatic one-match suspension. However, Cristiano Ronaldo is at risk of a significantly longer suspension after being sacked for violent behavior.

Typically, violent behavior carries a three-game suspension, but the exact length depends on the referee’s report and the disciplinary committee’s interpretation of the incident.

In this case, the decision would be left to an independent disciplinary committee, as the qualifiers fall under the UEFA section of FIFA World Cup qualifiers. If the club deems the elbow to be unduly dangerous or deliberate, it has the power to extend the penalty beyond the standard range.

For Portugal, the implications are profound. Suspensions received during the World Cup qualifiers will apply not only to the remaining qualifiers, but also to the World Cup tournament itself if the team advances.

Portugal are currently preparing for a showdown with Armenia, bottom of Group F, but will have to do so without Ronaldo’s presence, leadership and threat.

If Ronaldo were to receive a multi-match suspension, he would be ruled out of Portugal’s first match at the 2026 World Cup, a scenario that would leave a big hole in Martinez’s plans.

Even at the age of 40, Ronaldo remains central to the team’s identity and continues to churn out goals at an incredible pace during the qualifying campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved some historic feats, but rarely do international assignments bring emotions to a boil in such a dramatic way. But this moment of frustration can have long-term consequences.

What is certain is that Portugal will go into the season’s most important qualifying round – and potentially the opening World Cup match – without their captain. A night that started with a shot at qualifying ended with the team’s biggest star watching from the tunnel.
