Jose Mourinho is widely regarded as one of the most successful managers in football history. Fenerbae had a reputation ahead of them and were hopeful that the legendary Portuguese coach would keep them at the pinnacle of Turkish football. Not only did that not happen, but Mourinho’s tenure may have cost the club far more than expected.
Mourinho joined Fenerbage in 2024 with a clear mission to maintain their domestic dominance and return the team to European competition. Given his track record, which includes two Champions League titles, six National League titles across three countries, and numerous other accolades, that goal seemed well within reach. However, things quickly unraveled.
Just 15 months after signing a contract reportedly worth $11.4 million a year, Mourinho was shown the door. He left not only the dashed hopes of the Fenerbaje fans, but also a staggering financial burden.
Mourinho’s luxurious life in Istanbul
After Mourinho’s departure, a report in Yenikag Gazetesi revealed surprising details about Mourinho’s time in Türkiye. Instead of renting a private residence, he chose to live at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul.
The cheapest room at the hotel costs about $1,320 a night, the paper said. Mourinho reportedly stayed in one of the most luxurious suites, living up to his ‘Special One’ persona.
According to estimates, Mr. Fenerbaje’s accommodation costs may have been around 36.5 million Turkish liras, or about $863,300, for his 15-month stay.
Set on the shores of the Bosphorus, Four Seasons Istanbul offers five restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, a winter garden, a gym and a spa, making it Mourinho’s perfect retreat.
Where is Mourinho now?
After parting ways with Fenerbae, Mourinho returned to his roots. He currently manages Portugal’s Benfica, the first club he has coached.
His new mission is off to a good start. Under Mourinho, Benfica are undefeated with seven wins and four draws, and currently sit third in the Portuguese league with 17 points.
Mourinho left Turkey with a generous severance package. Meanwhile, Fenerbae is forced to rebuild and has to pay a huge amount of money that will bring tears to everyone’s eyes.
