We’ve been crunching the news on MARCA for months. Since it was already created, all I had to do was press the “Publish” button. But the famous loose end took so long to settle that some people were impatient to take it for granted before it was confirmed.
Finally, after a slow simmer, Inter Miami officially announced the renewal of Lionel Messi’s contract until the end of 2028 (Messi’s contract expires at the age of 41.5), but as explained yesterday, this three-year renewal is symbolic. In other words, if Leo decides to finish it early, there will be no problem. Not least because he is also the owner of the club, as he owns a (still small) portion of the shares controlled by the Mas brothers.
Lionel Messi takes Inter Miami to a new level
This deal had many benefits, which is why the news of the song was slow to arrive several months ago. The fact that MLS intervenes so heavily (too much) in the assets of every club in the league also made operations a little more complicated. And so it was.
Messi has won two titles since joining the club
This is a renewal with big long-term goals. Messi has won two titles since joining the club: last year’s Supporters’ Shield (regular season champion) and the 2023 League Cup. So the big goal is to play in MLS Cup. The MLS Cup playoffs (3 games) begin this Saturday against Nashville. Leo is in prime form as the regular season’s top scorer with 29 goals in 28 games.
At international level, the ConcaChampions are also a challenge for him (4 wins with Barcelona in Europe). In 2024, he bid farewell to that tournament in the quarterfinals, and in 2025, Inter Miami reached the semifinals. That’s a big goal for the club.
That’s how it all happened. This update was done so cleverly that the photo above of Leo signing his new contract was taken a few weeks ago. And it has that symbolism. What you can see in the background is the current framework of Inter’s new stadium, Freedom Park, which will be unveiled early next year and will be the club’s future.
Inter…We can rest assured that our star players will continue.
