Esther González and Gotham FC have agreed to a mutual release from his contract, allowing the Spanish forward to focus on his personal matters in Spain.
Gonzalez won 2023 Women’s World Cup He scored six goals for Spain and was Gotham’s top scorer this season.
González, 33, has scored a team-high 30 regular-season goals since joining Gotham in August 2023. During her tenure, Gotham won two games. NWSL Championship and CONCACAF W Champions Cup.
“This journey has exceeded every expectation I had when I first came to Gotham. Together, we accomplished everything we set out to accomplish. I will forever be proud to have won it all with this club,” González said in a statement. “But beyond the trophies, Gotham is where I grew in so many ways, as a player, as a professional, and most importantly as a person. And here in New Jersey, it’s also where my family grew up. I have so many great memories, but every time I think about this club, I know I’ll do it with a smile on my face.”
Before joining Gotham, González played for Real Madrid, scoring 30 goals in 54 appearances. She was also part of the Spanish team. Runner-up at the 2025 Women’s European Championship.
“Esther is an exemplary professional on and off the field, helping us win four major trophies and serving as a respected leader within our team,” said Gotham FC Director of Soccer Operations Yael Apfelbusch-West. “We would like to thank her for three wonderful years filled with world-class moments of brilliance. We will always support Esther in whatever path she takes.”
