PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) – Tara Ladd and Trinity Rodman scored for the Washington Spirit, who defeated the Boston Legacy 2-1 on Sunday in the first meeting between the teams.
Ladd’s looping header went over Boston goalkeeper Casey Murphy and rebounded into the goal in the 25th minute.
The goal ended Legacy, an expansion team playing at Centerville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, at 273 minutes.
Rodman picked up the ball from Gift Monday, sprinted into the box and scored with a low shot in the 31st minute, scoring his seventh goal in his last 10 games.
Boston scored in the 88th minute when Sammy Smith beat Spirit goalkeeper Sandy McIver.
The Spirit (9-3-3) was coming off a 1-0 midweek loss to Gotham FC in front of more than 42,000 people at Citi Field in New York. As a result of recent games, Spirit coach Adrian González made seven changes to his starting lineup.
The Spirit moved to the top of the National Women’s Soccer League standings, tied with Gotham on points.
With this loss, Legacy (4 wins, 8 losses, 4 draws) ended its winning streak at two.
