The football world is in mourning today. Kevin Keegan, who won the Ballon d’Or twice in 1978 and 1979, has died at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer. The news was first reported by British media and later confirmed by his family.
The former striker revealed just seven weeks ago that he had stage four cancer.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75,” his family said in a statement.
“The former England player and national team manager was battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.”
Keegan, who won three Premier League titles and the UEFA Cup with Liverpool, scored 100 goals for the Reds during his glittering career.
“He was a deeply loved husband, father and grandfather,” the family added, adding that they also thanked the “incredible” medical team who cared for and supported him throughout his illness.
