MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – John Stones returned to England’s starting lineup for Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway, effectively taking the spot held by suspended defender Jarrell Quansah for the past three games.
The move means that two of Manchester City’s defenders, Stones and Marc Göch, will face Norway’s star striker Erling Haaland, who also plays for the same club, in England’s opening eleven.
Quansah will start after serving a two-match suspension imposed after receiving a red card in the Round of 16 win over Mexico. Stones has not started for England since the opening game of the World Cup. Another switch for England: Noni Maduke returns to the wing, dropping Bukayo Saka to the bench.
Norway also made a change to their squad, adding midfielder Andreas Schjelderup. He came on as a substitute and assisted Haaland’s two goals in the 2-1 win over Brazil in the Round of 16.
It was Schjelderup’s second start in a World Cup. He also started in Norway’s loss to France in the group stage. In this match, the team had already decided to advance to the knockout stage, so coach Starre Solbakken played mostly as backup.
