American star Christian Pulisic breaks his right leg during a match. The U.S. national team lost to Belgium in the World Cup. And he will be out for a few weeks.
The U.S. Soccer Federation announced Thursday that Pulisic suffered bone contusions and microfractures to his tibia and fibula. The diagnosis was made on Tuesday after undergoing X-rays and an MRI scan.
Had the U.S. advanced, he would not have been able to play in the remainder of the tournament.
Pulisic is expected to resume training in time for AC Milan’s Serie A opener in Turin on August 23.
Pulisic hits Belgium captain in the leg Youri Tielemans attempts a shot in the 52nd minute of Monday’s 4-1 loss to Seattle in the Round of 16. He remained in the match but limped off and was replaced in the 59th minute by Sebastian Berhalter.
Pulisic failed to score at the World Cup, missing one of the U.S.’s five games with a calf injury and exiting two others early. He has scored 30 goals in 90 international games.
Pulisic, who turns 28 in September, will be entering his fourth season with Milan.
