Tottenham on Monday signed Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for a reported £100 million ($133 million), a club record deal, increasing their off-season spending to more than $300 million.

This is the second time in five days that Tottenham have broken their transfer record. Matheus Fernandes He was acquired from West Ham on Thursday for 85 million pounds ($113 million).

Center back before this summer Jan Paul van Hecke Marco Senesi and former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson have already arrived, with recently appointed Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi rebuilding the team that avoided relegation from the Premier League on the final day of last season.

Tottenham have finished 17th in the 20-team league in each of the past two seasons.

Tonali confirmed last week that he will be heading to Tottenham after three years at Newcastle. 10 month suspension for his role in the gambling scandal. He has established himself as one of the best midfielders in English football.

“People have said there could be four or five clubs,” Tonali said in Tottenham’s statement, referring to reported interest from the likes of Manchester United. “There was only one.”

Tonali previously said fellow Italian De Zerbi’s presence was a “huge” factor in the move, as well as a “lifestyle and family choice” after the birth of his son last year.

Tottenham spend big money

This is an unprecedented spending spree for Tottenham, who have long lagged behind their main rivals in the Premier League in terms of player spending.

departure last year Daniel Levywho was chairman for nearly 25 years and was well known for keeping the team profitable and being pragmatic in the transfer market, appears to have changed things. Levy was accused by many Tottenham fans of putting profit over silverware after failing to fully support some of football’s highest-profile hires in recent years, including Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Following two successive seasons of humiliating fixtures in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s leadership has turned heads, with chairman Peter Charrington writing: open letter After last season, the club “discovered some inconvenient truths” and said “football success was not the driving force behind our decisions.”

Charrington presented fans with a list of five promises, including that the club would “invest over multiple transfer windows to rebuild, balance and strengthen” the squad for De Zerbi, who had signed him to a five-year deal.

It remains true to its word.

Tottenham have also raised money over the past year, winning the Europa League in 2025 and reaching the round of 16 in the Champions League last season.

Newcastle transfer business

Tonali’s sale – the second-highest fee Newcastle have ever received for a player after Alexander Isak, who left for Liverpool last year – comes a day after the club signed Bazmana Toure for an estimated £43 million (about $57 million).

Toure, who just finished the World Cup with Ivory Coast, is a winger and appears to be a similar player. Anthony Gordon’s replacement. The England international joined Barcelona before the World Cup.

Toure, 20, joined Hoffenheim for more than five times the fee he paid for Swedish club Hammarby a year and a half ago. Last season, he scored five goals in the Bundesliga and provided nine assists, tied for fourth among all players.
