CHICAGO (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs were delayed for 15 minutes after the sixth inning Saturday night at Wrigley Field due to fog.
The Cardinals led 2-0 when play was stopped and won 3-0.
A crowd of 38,872 sang John Denver songs. “Take me home, country road.” when the delay started. The song appeared during the World Cup soccer tournament, with U.S. players singing it at the end of games along with tens of thousands of fans.
A rare Saturday night game at the iconic Northside Ballpark started an hour late because of rain, and by the second inning it was thickening as fog rolled in from the north. The players seemed to be struggling to track the fly ball, but there were no misplays.
The referees conferred with St. Louis coach Oliver Marmol and Chicago’s Craig Counsell, and a delay due to “local weather” was announced on the video board.
