SEATTLE (AP) — Senegal lost after taking a late lead against Belgium. world cup, midfielder Pape Gueye said. He will not play for the team while the coaching staff remains.
Senegal led 2-0 after 85 minutes in the Round of 32 match, but conceded two goals before the 90th minute and was awarded a penalty just before extra time, losing 3-2.
“As long as this technical staff is here, I will stay away from the national team,” Gueye posted on Instagram.
The 27-year-old Villarreal player, who scored twice in Senegal’s 5-0 win over Iraq in the group stage, did not mention coach Pape Tiao.
Senegal had a difficult year in January when their African Cup of Nations title, won by Gueye’s extra-time goal against Morocco, was overturned in an unprecedented appeal.
Thiau then led his team off the pitch after hosts Morocco were awarded a penalty in stoppage time with the score 0-0. After a 15-minute delay, the match resumed and Morocco’s penalty was saved.
After Morocco appealed the post-match disciplinary decision, a Confederation of African Football judge ruled that Senegal should not have played the match and that Thiau should be suspended for five games in the next tournament.
Senegal is awaiting an appeal hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.
