MADRID (AP) – Former Spain international Santi Cazorla will retire from soccer at the age of 41.
Cazorla announced: Post to Instagramending a successful career spanning over 20 years.
“Some stories never end…they live on forever,” the post reads. “Thank you for everything.”
Cazorla has been playing for his boyhood club Oviedo in Spain since 2023, helping them win promotion to the first division a season ago. The club suffered relegation again this season.
He developed at Villarreal and Arsenal, where he was a mainstay under manager Arsene Wenger from 2012 to 2018. With Spain, the playmaker won the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
Cazorla has been plagued by serious injuries throughout his career, including one that prevented him from playing during Spain’s World Cup victory in 2010.
