Even the most positive Mexican fan could not have imagined that the national team would get off to such a picture-perfect start at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic on Wednesday, El Tri completed a perfect group stage with nine points won and zero conceded from nine games.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Mexico’s third tournament win has nothing to do with the team’s success. Probably the most important player in the team, who is likely to be very important in the future, made his first World Cup start against the Czech Republic. Gilberto Mora, a 17-year-old attacking midfielder who plays for Tijuana, played 72 minutes and created two scoring chances.

Mexican phenom Gilberto Mora returns to the field, thrilling fans

Although it wasn’t an outstanding performance, Mora’s immense talent was on full display. Europe’s top clubs were already paying attention to him, but one giant in particular is paying even more attention to him after his appearance in the World Cup.

Manchester United begin aggressive pursuit of Gilberto Mora

According to Graham Bailey’s report, which arrived the day after Mexico vs. the Czech Republic, Manchester United were “probably the most active of any Premier League club” in signing Mora. They appear to be competing with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Apparently, Premier League teams are not the only ones interested in signing the Mexican. Spanish giants Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid also have a strong interest in him. A bidding war is sure to ensue sooner or later.
