NEW YORK (AP) — World Cup pundit and former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ended an interview after being asked about former Germany player Bastian Schweinsteiger’s characteristics about the Ivory Coast’s playing style.
“It’s a little bit African football, a little bit unconventional, a little bit wild, maybe not so adapted to tactics. We have to be prepared for the unpredictability,” Schweinsteiger said as a commentator on German broadcaster ARD before last weekend’s match between Germany and Ivory Coast.
Klopp, who works for broadcaster Magenta, appeared perplexed when asked about Schweinsteiger’s comments by Deutsche Welle during a gathering with journalists in New York on Wednesday.
Klopp responded: “Then you would like to continue this topic.” “No, no, no chance. No chance to answer this question. You bring me into this situation because everyone likes it. It’s not my job for everyone to like it, but this is a serious subject and I don’t even know what’s appropriate to say. For African people, it’s another thing. For other people, it’s another thing, and I’m not here.”
Klopp said he felt lucky to have avoided the topic.
“Thank God no one asked me about it,” he said sarcastically as he left. “You found your timing, and surprisingly, you’re German. I was very surprised by that.”
