MIAMI (AP) — The eight teams playing World Cup matches on Thursday will participate in International Day Against Hate Speech by exchanging pennants condemning hate speech before the game.
Captains attending the Czech Republic vs. South Africa, Mexico vs. South Korea, Switzerland vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Canada vs. Qatar teams will hold up a pennant that reads “We Play Together. We Stand Against Hate,” with English written on one side and the team’s native language on the other.
FIFA has announced that it has removed more than 30 million abusive posts and comments since creating its social media protection service ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
FIFA said it removed nearly 400,000 negative or abusive posts in the first few days of the World Cup, more than it removed in the entire 2022 tournament.
Other stadium activities containing that message are also planned during Thursday’s game.
