GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) – A combination of a Calvin Harris concert and Commonwealth Games events forces Celtic to play their Scottish Premiership opener title defense On Monday night, the club described the situation as “unfortunate”.
Celtic’s home match against Dundee has been postponed to Monday 3 August instead of being played on the previous Saturday or Sunday.
“We were told that Police Scotland had no choice as they were unable to support this match over the weekend as it coincided with other events,” Celtic said.
That weekend saw DJ Calvin Harris perform elsewhere in Glasgow, as well as track cycling at the Commonwealth Games at the velodrome opposite Celtic Stadium.
Once Celtic are league champions, the club will call the first match of the following season ‘Champions Flag Day’. This is because the flag is raised in the center of the field as the fans cheer.
“Our priority has always been our supporters and holding Champions Flag Day on a Monday night is disappointing at best,” Celtic said.
“We have repeatedly expressed to Police Scotland and the SPFL to avoid this schedule.”
The club added: “We strongly feel that in the interests of both teams, both supporters and the circumstances of the match, the timing of the weekend should have been facilitated.”
