SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – The San Jose Earthquakes on Monday signed coach Bruce Arena to a new contract through the 2028-29 MLS season.
Arena, a former U.S. men’s national team coach, has helped rebuild the Earthquakes since taking over before last season. San Jose has a 10-3-2 record this season and is tied for the most points in the Western Conference at the time of the World Cup suspension.
“We are proud to have Bruce lead the club,” said Earthquakes Managing Partner John Fisher. “He has done a great job rebuilding this team and putting it among the top teams in MLS this season. He has not only put together a great young team that is already contending for the playoffs this year, but he has also built a team that is set up for sustained, long-term success. We are excited to keep the Blues in San Jose for the foreseeable future.”
The Earthquakes had the best start in franchise history, winning nine of the first 10 games to open the season. The Quakes need one more win with 19 games remaining to equal last season’s regular season total and five more to become the team’s most since winning the Supporters’ Shield in 2012.
“I have enjoyed my time here in San Jose and am excited to continue to watch this team grow and compete at the highest level in MLS,” Arena said. “We have a great core group of players here and a loyal fan base that has treated me well from the beginning.”
Arena led the U.S. team to two World Cup appearances, including a quarterfinal appearance in 2002. He also won five MLS Cups and played a league-record 283 regular season games in a career that included stints with D.C. United, New York Red Bulls, Los Angeles Galaxy and New England Revolution.
