Two people have been detained by police investigating suspicions that equipment was stolen from the UK. world cup A soccer team from Kansas City, Missouri.
England were due to arrive at their training base at Swope Soccer Village on Saturday after completing pre-tournament preparations in Florida.
Kansas City police said items were missing from the team vehicle, and a logistics team arrived ahead of the players to set up camp, which will be home to the World Cup.
The English Football Association confirmed to The Associated Press that the theft was a possibility, but said it could not provide any further information as it was a police matter.
Police said the incident occurred on Friday night.
“We are investigating possible theft of equipment as items may have been missing from the team vehicle that arrived in Kansas City this evening,” police said in a statement to The Associated Press.
“Two subjects of interest have been detained pending further investigation.”
It was reported on Saturday that some equipment had been recovered, but police have not confirmed that.
England begin their World Cup campaign on Wednesday against Croatia in Group L at Dallas Stadium.
England are due to hold their first public training session at Swope Soccer Village later on Saturday, but severe thunderstorms threaten to cancel the session, which is open to local residents.
Kansas City’s central location makes it an ideal base, meaning the England team will have little to no intercontinental flights during the tournament. Defending champion Argentina is also based in Kansas City, which has spent more than $650 million on soccer infrastructure over the past 15 years, according to Jake Reed, president and CEO of Sporting Kansas City.
