Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool is once again in the spotlight. It recently emerged that the Egyptian forward could reverse his decision to leave the England team if there is a major overhaul of the club’s sporting project.
According to a reporter for The Athletic (via Sportskeeda), sources close to Salah say he is open to remaining at Anfield, despite having previously announced his departure and despite very clear demands from manager Arne Slott and part of the club’s management to leave.
Salah’s stay at Liverpool
Simon Hughes, senior editor of The Athletic, revealed that sources close to Mohamed have claimed that he may be interested in staying at the club, and that he has not completely ruled out extending his contract with Liverpool.
Salah signed a two-year contract extension last year. With 12 months left, ‘Mo’ may be on track to play his 10th season with the team. The newspaper said a leadership change involving Slott and his supporters on Liverpool’s board could encourage Salah to stay with the Reds.
The controversy had already taken shape with the forward’s social media posts publicly questioning the style of play introduced by manager Arne Slott following the 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa.
“To have this season come crashing down with yet another defeat was extremely painful and not what the fans deserved. I want to see Liverpool go back to being a heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear, and a team that wins trophies. That’s the football I know how to play, and that’s the identity we need to recover and hold onto forever,” the 33-year-old right-winger wrote before issuing a statement that could be interpreted as a warning to Slott. This club has to adapt to that.”
The forward also stressed that the club must get back to being a consistent title contender, rather than resting on their laurels with isolated wins. His words received public support from several current and former Liverpool players who ‘liked’ the post, including Ekitike, Jones, Harvey Elliott, Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkes. However, he also faced criticism from other former players and football legends.
Nevertheless, despite claims that Salah will stay, Liverpool have shown no signs of wanting to slot in or replace the current regime. So everything points to next Sunday, May 24th, against Brentford being Mohamed’s last game of the season.
The match, part of Round 38 of the Premier League, will be held at Anfield from 11am ET and promises to be full of excitement.
