MEXICO CITY (AP) — Goaltender Luis Garcia’s heroic shootout is lifted. Toluca past UANL Tigress Saturday’s victory clinched the club’s first CONCACAF Champions Cup title in 23 years.
Jorge Diaz Price, who came on in the 88th minute, gave the home side the lead at the end of the first half of extra time, but Brazilian defender Joaquín Pereira leveled the score with a header in the 113th minute.
In the penalty shootout, Garcia saved shots from Fernando Goliaran and Jose Juan Plata, and Toluca won 6-5.
The Red Devils won the championship after defeating LAFC in a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the semifinals. Concuff This is the third title in their history and the first since 2003.
With this victory, Toluca qualified for both the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, alongside 2025 champions Cruz Azul.
CONCACAF has four spots allotted for the next Club World Cup.
UANL Tigres was aiming for their second CONCACAF title and first since 2020.
Toluca’s victory extended the Mexican team’s winning streak in the Campenes Cup to four in a row. The Seattle Sounders became the last non-Mexican team to win the title in 2022.
