PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The last-place Philadelphia Union fired manager Bradley Carnell on Wednesday as part of a front office overhaul that includes naming John Scheer athletic director.
Ryan Richter, head coach of the club’s development team, Philadelphia Union II, has been named interim replacement for the Kernels.
The move comes less than a year after Carnell led the Union to the best record in MLS in his first season as head coach. Philadelphia was the top seed in the playoffs but was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
The Colonels didn’t make it past the middle of their second year, as the team opted to transfer to the Union with a record of 1 win, 10 losses, and 4 draws, the worst record in the 30-team league.
Union chief owner Jay Sugarman praised Carnell’s professionalism and expressed confidence in Richter in the search for Carnell’s permanent replacement. Richter served as assistant head coach of the first team from 2022 to 2024, and was appointed head coach of Union II in January 2025.
Mr. Scheer has been involved with the association since 2018 and has held various roles including Director of Academy and Professional Development and most recently Interim Athletic Director.
