COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark and celtic Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel The Premier League winning team faced Leicester, which suffered the biggest shock in the soccer world in 2016.announced his retirement from soccer due to a serious shoulder injury.
“When my contract with Celtic expires in June, my active football career will end,” Schmeichel said in an interview with Danish TV2 on Wednesday. “I think now is the right time to announce that I have played my last professional football game.”
Schmeichel, 39, has been sidelined since February.
Schmeichel, the son of former Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel, required two operations in March but revealed he was determined to try to get his career back on track.
“I didn’t want my career to end like this,” said the former Manchester City, Leeds, Nice and Anderlecht keeper, who played in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Schmeichel last appeared for Denmark in the World Cup qualifying defeat against Scotland in November.
DBU, the Danish football governing body, posted on X: “From his debut in Skopje to his World Cup debut against Peru, big saves against the best countries in the world, Euro semi-finals at Wembley and more. 13 years. 120 matches for the national team. Thank you Kasper for the unforgettable moments.”
